When your application calls for a multiple-microphone setup, such as an onstage panel discussion, press conference or courtroom proceeding, etc., it can become a challenge to maintain so many open mics and preserve maximum gain and priority for the moderator. M AIR Gain Sharing technology can easily manage fully automated mixes with up to 16 live microphones. Based on the legendary Dan Dugan automix system, the MR18s gain sharing paradigm automatically controls the levels of all selected microphones in real time, without any gating artifacts or noise modulation. The following outlines how to setup and operate the automix function on the M Air Mixers. There is also a video for reference at the end of the article.Step 1: Assign ChannelsThere are 2 Automix groups on the M Air Mixers - X and Y. To assign a channel simply select the group on the right of the app. As shown below where X is selected:User-added imageOnce a group is selected you can click the button on the right of each channel. In the example below you can see channels 1 and 2 assigned to Automix group X whilst 3 and 4 are assigned to group Y:User-added imageAlternatively you can go in to the Config screen of channels individually and set the Automix Group here: User-added imageStep 2: Set WeightingWhen a channel is assigned and the group is active you will see a white arrow along the fader. Moving this arrow adjusts the "Weighting" of a channel in the Automix. The higher the "Weight" on a channel the more priority that signal will have through the Automix. A useful application would be to give the host of a panel higher weight, this means when panelists are speaking and the host interjects the panelists mic level will be reduced more and the host has the strongest signal. User-added imageStep 3: ActivateThe Automix group is turned on and off on the right side of the app. You can also note here the "last gate" button. This can be used when on person is speaking for extended amounts of time, it will keep the most recently active channel open preventing unwanted artifacts of the gate opening and closing during pauses in their speech.User-added imageOnce the Automix is Active and in use you will see the reduction of channel signal shown by the blue meter on each channel fader. Please see the video below for examples of the Automix in action.
