AES50 Not much to say about the AES50 feature, both units have the standard AES50 A and B ports for seamless integration to X32 units. *We always recommend using a high quality, shielded Cat5E cable with Ethercon connectors no more than 100 metres preferebly lower than 80 if manageable. The S16 has one P16 Ultranet port, two ADAT optical outputs and a Midi In and Out port. The P16 port on the S16 is not phantom powered so a P16-M plugged inot it will need it's power supply. Further daisy chaining of P16-M modules can be done as usual from this port. In contrast the SD16 only features the P16 Ultranet port but it has four of these and they are all phantom powered so any P16-M modules connected will be powered from this port through the ethernet Cat5 cable for ease of use. *The P16-M is our Personal Monitoring Module, for more info on this please follow the link: http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/P16-M.aspx ON-BOARD CONTROLS The S16 features more on-board control than the SD16. The S16 works equally well as a stand-alone pair for use with analog mixing consoles as well as ideal and seamless integration with our range of X32 digital mixing consoles of course. So in light of this there are a lot of control options available from the actual S16 stagebox where as the SD16 does not feature this level of on board control nor is it a stand alone box, the SD16 is primarily designed for the X32 series of mixers and future Behringer products. The S16 also features a dedicated headphone amp for direct monitoring, an onboard VU meter to monitor inputs and outputs and more control options for setup of the unit and applying phantom power etc. More info available in the S16 manual: http://www.behringer.com/assets/S16_M_EN.pdf USB CONNECTION Both units feature a USB connection. This connection is solely reserved for updating firmware on the units. The USB connection is not an audio interface for connecting to a computer to pass through audio, all audio is only relayed through the AES50 connections. INTER-CONNECTIVITY It should be noted any combination of S16's and SD16's (or S32's and SD8's for that matter) can be used in conjunction with any combination of our X32 digital mixers such is the superb flexibility and ease of setup that our full Digital Mixing Systems have. In this article we will discuss the main differences of these two stage boxes. They are both very similar units and have a shared application as an AES50 stagebox extension for the X32 series of mixers and racks but they consist of a few different features so this article will help users in identifying these and enabling the correct choice for them and their audio requirements. PREAMPS Both units feature the same 16 MIDAS-designed, fully programmable mic preamps. The difference comes with the connectors used to feed the preamps. The S16 features Balanced/Un-Balanced XLR inputs. The SD16 has the same Balanced/Un-Balanced XLR inputs but with a dual connection so TS or TRS 1/4 inch Jacks can also be used, also included are two Hi-Z inputs (high impedance) for connecting guitars etc directly. Both units also feature 8 servo-balanced XLR outputs.
